We can now do the ham licence exam "in house", permission granted by Industry Canada yesterday. As planned, I am going to run a one day seminar so we can get everyone certificated, plus shed some light on HAGAR stuff.........read on.....
Good news: ISS is running a one day Ham Radio licence and HAGAR course

Bad News:
Mark Johnston is teaching both, and administering the ham exam :-)

When: Saturday or Sunday sometime this Winter. When would you folks like it???

Where: Where can we get a class room? How many people are coming?

How much: FREE for ISS members (if club picks up cost of the photo copies)

What is Ham Radio?

It is the high quality/cheap radios that most pilots use to chat, keep safely in touch with one another, and call for retrieve after a cross country flight. You need a basic licence to legally operate one. If you write the exam at the government office it costs you $20 to write it, if you do it with our club its FREE. (we can now do this in house without bothering Nicole to come over)

What is HAGAR?

It is a government written exam that, once passed, allows Hang Glider and Paraglider Pilots a far greater freedom in the kinds and amounts of airspace they can fly in. It is a requirement for an Intermeadiate flying rating, and Dallas Rd flying. It covers Airspace and Air Regulations. The exam can be written at the Victoria Flying Club.

What is involved?

1-Ham Radio; Self study of 330 questions and answers (yes, you get the answers!!) The study guide is on the club website already. It is full of stuff you will NEVER really care about, but one or two reads through the stuff, and you will most likely get more than the min pass grade of 70%. Don’t try to understand it, just read the question and the correct answer, again -DON’T TRY TO UNDERSTAND IT OR MEMORIZE IT-, when the exam comes you will recognise enough to get the 70% you need. I’ll do a 2-3hour class in the AM to refresh memories and fill in some blanks, then we take a quick lunch, then write the exam. Rewrites available until you pass!!

2-HAGAR; Afternoon of the same day. Hopefully this will bring light to a subject that is poorly understood, mostly because the air regs are written for lawyers not pilots. I gave this same lecture during my instructors refresher class last year, and it was a hit. This stuff is much easier to understand, remember, and apply when its explained, rather than trying to just read the Canadian air regs. We’ll go over airspace, rules & regs, and map reading. When you finish, you will no longer wonder what kind of airspace you are in, or what kind you should be in, or how high you can be when you are in i t:-). Plus you should pass the HAGAR exam. I hope this class will take 2-3 hrs in the afternoon of the same day.

What do you need to do?

If you are interested in attending, let me know

If you can find a classroom, let me know

If you have a projector for a powerpoint presentation, let me know

You need to download and struggle through the self study ham guide.

Tell me what you think might be a good day to do this.

Great stuff Mark!

If people can decide on the month, I have my work schedule handy for this year and next. I would then be able to post my day preferences in the chosen month.

That is very thoughtful of you to put aside a whole day of your busy schedule to help us fellow pilots gain not only the required certification to legally operate our radios and fly in controlled airspace, but also to be able to fly with more safety, confidence and professionalism.
Any Sunday would be great for me.
I converted the Ham Exam to an Adobe pdf file which allows you to close the file, and the next time you re-open it you will be at the same place you were at when closed. Much easier. I sent a copy to Dave Underwood to post on the website. It's not there yet, so anyone who wants a copy, send me an email at ayrgasm@shaw.ca
Thanks very much, Mark!
cheers,

Personal Call signs    By Markj on 10/9/2007 7:11 PM
When you use an aircraft radio in a Hang/Paraglider, Air traffic control expects you to use a proper "call sign". In a regular airplane, its a 5 letter call sign, but you only (normally) give them the last 3 letters....so if you're a hang/paraglider and calling in, you need a 3 letter "call sign". What you are supposed to do is use the initials of your name. IE Mark Robert Johnston would be a transmission to ATC as "glider M-R-J" (except of course you use the proper international phonetics, " Glider - Mike Romeo Juliet". IN KEEPING with that format....Hang/Paraglider HAM radio people have typically (not required, and just for kicks) ask for their Ham "call sign" with the same 3 letters. SO if you want to see if "your" call sign is available, you can look on this website and search to see if someone may already have "taken" it. As we live in BC, you need to look for possible combinations of call signs with either "VE7- - - " or " VA7 - - -".
Have fun :-)

When you write and pass your exam on the 28th, we will apply for your call sign that day too, so be ready with your choices!!

If you want to practice the Ham exam (after you have read through the questions and answers a couple times), try this....
